Ernest George Schieferstein Sr. of Wainscott died peacefully on September 16 in his home, surrounded by family. He was 98.
Mr. Schieferstein was born in Richmond Hill, New York on December 29, 1922, to Carl and Charlotte Schieferstein.
He served with distinction in the U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater out of England during World War II, where he was in the 303rd Bomb Group as a flight engineer on a B17g Bomber. He loved sharing his captivating stories about World War II with his friends and family.
Mr. Schieferstein earned a degree in industrial design from Pratt Institute. He went on to have a long career in chemical engineering and piping design.
Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Wainscott, where he enjoyed woodworking, giving back to his community, nature, spending time with his cat Jax, and watching BBC murder mysteries.
He was a caring and loving father and grandfather who touched the heart of every person he met, according to his family.
Mr. Schieferstein was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Anneliese Schieferstein. He is survived by his daughter Kristine Kim; his son Ernest Schieferstein Jr. and his wife Diane; and three grandchildren, Aaron, Cassie and Daria.
He was interred at Calverton National Cemetery on September 21.
