Eugene J. Cattaneo
Eugene J. Cattaneo Sr., known as Gene, died on February 14 at Otterbein Senior Care in Maineville, Ohio. He was 94.
Mr. Cattaneo was born on March 19, 1918, in Brooklyn and earned an engineering degree from Pratt Institute in 1940. On October 11, 1941, he married Mabel Henrietta (Pat) Lycke of Bayshore and originally from Quogue. Mr. Cattaneo was an active volunteer involved with schools, Boy Scouts, 4-H, and his local parishes of St. Francis D. Chantel in Wantaugh, St. Lawrence The Martyr in Sayville, St. Michael’s in Maryland and St. Peter’s in Ohio.
He was a member of the 101st Mounted Calvary in the late 1930s and worked 27 years for Republic Aviation in Farmingdale. Later, he worked for Westinghouse in Maryland and Ohio, United Aircraft Products, Superior Water Systems, and Mansfield Aircraft Products Company, all in Ohio.
Mr. Cattaneo was an avid enthusiast of photography, boating, horticulture, gardening, antiques, automobiles, raising livestock, and equestrian sports. He also enjoyed golf, pinochle, chess, and backgammon.
Mr. Cattaneo is survived by his four sons, David, Ralph, Steven and Gerald; and a daughter, Lucia Cattaneo Wipraechtiger; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Pat; parents, Julius and America; a sister, Edith Dierauer; a son, Eugene Cattaneo, Jr.; a daughter, Teresa Alice; and his grandson, Thierry Wipraechtiger.
Visitation was held on Monday, February 18, at the Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. A funeral Mass took place on Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Quiogue.
