Evelyn ‘Cissy’ Bradford Ritz, a lifelong resident of East Hampton and Bridgehampton, died peacefully on April 10 at Peconic Landing in Greenport. She was 86.

She was born on September 18, 1938, days before the Hurricane of 1938, to Henry William Bradford and Evelyn Talmage Bradford of Buell Lane.

She attended East Hampton schools and graduated from Keuka College. She worked in New York City for Allied Graphic Arts while studying for her teaching certification at Hunter College. After moving back to the East End, she married Frederick W. Ritz of Bridgehampton, where they raised their family in his childhood home on Hildreth Avenue.

Early on, she taught third grade in Riverhead and substituted in the Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, and Sag Harbor school districts. She later became a real estate broker and worked in the industry for over 30 years.

For 18 years, she was the Treasurer of the Friends of the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton and over her lifetime served on a variety of committees for the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for the food pantry at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in addition to giving her time to a host of local organizations and causes.

She loved everything outdoors and enjoyed tennis, golf, bridge, gardening, skiing, traveling, and anything on the beach. She and her husband were members of the Bridgehampton Club, Shelter Island Yacht Club, Sag Harbor Yacht Club and former members of the Coral Beach Club, Bermuda. She was a member of the East Hampton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick W. Ritz; and her brother, Henry Bradford. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Caroleigh and Win Evarts of Norwalk, Connecticut, and their children, son-in-law, and grandson, Nick Evarts, Eliza, Kyle and Arthur Wagner, and Sam Evarts; her son and daughter-in-law Fred and Samone Ritz of Water Mill, and their children, Kaley, Fred, and Sarah; and her sister, Ann B. Roarick, of East Hampton.

A private family burial service will be held on April 19, at the Edgewood Cemetery in Bridgehampton. A celebration of her life will take place this summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Hampton Library, PO Box 3025, Bridgehampton, NY 11932.

Doing It

Lady bugs are doing very unladylike things. This jewel-like copulation takes place in a small tree. Out on a smooth, green limb, red, glistening bodies, casual soulmates, unhurried by time; the observer loses interest before they do. Spring is mainly the lovemaking act. And while you would not know this, listening to our selected leaders, take a walk and find a yellow butterfly to follow — up with your eye, into canopy and clouds. Find something in nature to follow instead. Snapping turtles are doing it, too. Mud-animated, these animals are unmolested in Sagg Pond — I mean, no one ... by Marilee Foster
