Fake Goods

In her October 23 Letter to the Editor, “Key Facts,” Rhonda Liss claims that I am self-righteous and hypocritical for signing a “deceptive” designating petition for registered Working Families Party candidates. Early voting has started, so I’ll attempt to rebut without violating Southampton Press rules.

Am I a self-righteous hypocrite for signing a designating petition, even if that petition is likely nothing more than a form of protest? Maybe. That said, it seems that hypocrisy is plentiful here in Southampton Town. Self-righteous hypocrisy is collecting designating petitions for a slate of Democrats and not telling your signers that you are sharing the line with Conservatives.

Self-righteous hypocrisy is John Avlon’s October 23 Letter to the Editor, “Something Crooked,” where he states that Democrats and Conservatives can cross-endorse one another, but the Republicans and Working Families parties cannot.

Self-righteous hypocrisy is putting out lawn signs reading “Vote Row C,” knowing that half the candidates on that row are Democrats. Self-righteous hypocrisy is attending “No Kings” rallies while allowing local party heads to play kingmakers in your town.

I have consistently railed against the cross-endorsement quid pro quo, but I am only one person. Entire committees march door to door selling fake goods to voters, yet inexplicably claim that they are not being deceptive.

Some of them go on to write Letters to the Editor.
