One person died on Monday, May 8, when a train struck a vehicle on the tracks that cross South Bay Avenue in Eastport.
Long Island Rail Road officials said the 4:30 p.m. train from Hunterspoint Avenue to Montauk struck the vehicle at approximately 6:25 p.m. They have not released the identity of the victim.
While crews worked to clear the area and police personnel conducted their preliminary investigation, the LIRR secured substitute bus service as the Montauk Branch was suspended in both directions east of Patchogue. Service was restored at approximately 8:37 p.m.
By Tuesday, LIRR officials could confirm the crossing gates were down and the lights were flashing prior to the collision, but the front of the car was low enough to get under the gate and bump it up.
The investigation is continuing.
