Fire badly damaged a historic home on Wickapogue Lane in eastern Southampton Village on Friday afternoon, February 7, but was extinguished by firefighters, saving the structure.
The fire broke out at the house at 440 Wickapogue Road, one of the original Wickapogue farmhouses, at about 12:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived they found flames climbing up the outside of the side of the house.
Southampton Fire Department Assistant Chiefs Ken Lockard and Richard Fowler called for assistance from specialized crews from North Sea, Sag Harbor, Hampton Bays and East Hampton fire departments, and the Bridgehampton Fire Department sent a crew to standby at the Southampton firehouses in case another call came in.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 20 minutes with minimal damage to the home.
Southampton Village fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire. Southampton Fire Department spokesman Chris Brenner said the cause did not appear to be suspicious.
