Fire in the Sky

Our neighbors to the north are seeing that fire and we the smoke. I could not see the Manhattan skyline while coming over the Verrazano Bridge today.

Is there a changed heart or mind out there as a result? Do we get the message? We are all in this together. Something has changed. We must change as well.

Mass electrification is a proposed change to meet the challenges of climate change. And battery storage systems are a needed part of this.

The Shinnecock Canal BESS site is as near perfect a place to trial one as can be found in our space-constrained place. Bounded on two sides by highway, a third side by a town highway depot, with 300 feet to any other property line. The ground has already been disturbed by prior building, and it is proximate to an existing power substation. This is a requirement for such systems.

Contrary to the opinions in The Press, the East Hampton BESS fire [“Fire Shuts Down East Hampton Energy Storage Batteries,” 27east.com, June 7] proves what we have been told: The fire suppression systems are state of the art, and they work.

Change is scary. Courage — action in the face of fear — is needed. I suggest we find it before the fire is in our backyard, not just the smoke.
