Fire destroyed a building at Applewild Farm, a Bridgehampton horse farm, around noon on Wednesday, December 1.

Firefighters from Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor and Southampton began arriving at the scene shortly after noon to find an outbuilding nestled between other barns, including a riding ring, fully engulfed in flames.

As thick black smoke rose over the barns, farmworkers tried to put the fire out with garden hoses to prevent it from spreading to nearby stables before firetrucks began arriving on Meadow Court, a cul de sac, just east of Mitchell Lane.

Bridgehampton Fire Chief Nick Hemby said it took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire. Flames had begun to spread to the nearby riding ring building, but were stopped before causing serious damage to the structure, he said.

Firefighters from Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, and Southampton fought the fire, while a truck from East Hampton stood by at the Bridgehampton Firehouse, according to the chief.

The Southampton Town fire marshal’s office was investigating the cause of the fire.
