The Sag Harbor Board of Education awarded the first of many contracts on Monday night to carry out approximately $9 million worth of school improvements approved by voters in November.

Although a majority of the publicly bid contracts are expected to be awarded in April or May 2015, the first step will be a comprehensive survey of the district’s properties.

To complete the survey, the board hired L.K. McLean Associates of Brookhaven—one of three companies that entered bids before the January 3 cutoff—for the amount of $22,650.

According to Business Administrator John O’Keefe, this bid was in the best interest of the district, coming in at less than half the bids by the other two companies, Barrett, Bonacci and Van of Hauppauge, which bid $59,900, and Lockwood, Kessler and Bartlett Inc. of Syosset, which bid $53,300.
