There was plenty to do this past weekend in our area, with all of the pumpkin patches opening for business and all of the corn mazes now in their finest form. While watching the news, I heard that there is actually a pumpkin shortage this year due to Hurricane Irene and all the flooding that she left behind.
It seems funny to me that a pumpkin shortage actually made the news, but I guess fall is the season to pick them and they do account for a lot of the business at our local farms. I’ve noticed that pumpkins were getting a bit expensive these past few years ... cannot wait to see how much they will cost now.
Hallockville held its annual tractor and farm show last weekend and that seemed to be a great success, as always. My husband, Chuck, was there giving demonstrations in different aspects of horse training while I was in Sayville with Travis at his baseball games. Some days, I think that the weekends have become more crazy than the weekdays! When will it all slow down?
Celebrating A Milestone: A very big happy birthday wish goes out this week to Alice V. Darden, who celebrated her 100th birthday on August 31. Alice lives in Southampton and her birthday party was held at the Riverhead Town Senior Center in Aquebogue on September 10.
Alice was greeted by a large group of relatives and well-wishers who filled the room with plenty of love. She even received a letter from President Barack Obama to congratulate her on her 100th birthday. She was elated. Alice says her secret to longevity is to trust in God and always have peace and love in your life. Happy birthday, Alice, from all of us here in Flanders!

The Riverhead Community Awareness Program (CAP) is looking for volunteers to help teach the 2011-12 Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program to fifth- and sixth-graders at the Pulaski Street School. The volunteers receive assistance from peer leaders from the eighth grade and high school during the seven-month-long program. No experience is necessary as training will be made available. The training begins in mid-October and participants can expect to commit about three hours a month during the school year.
CAP is also providing the Guiding Good Choices program at no charge to parents and guardians in the Riverhead School District. The five session workshop is geared to parents with children in grades 4-8 and focuses on drug education and strategies. For more details, please call Clare Marie Lundberg at 727-3722.
Have a great week everyone.
