Congratulations to Sip ’n Soda on its 50th birthday [“The Sweet Life,” June 12]. Sip ’n Soda has been part of my family history, too.
My parents first took my new (and first) husband to Sip ’n Soda on Fourth of July weekend in 1960. We were renting at 21 Elm Street from Helen Hudson (until 1982, by the way): no lawyers, no real estate agents, just two decent women behaving decently.
We were loyal weekenders at Sip ’n Soda every summer. Then, in 1970, my father took my husband and me (and our four children—the girls, ages 6 and 8, the twin boys, age 2) to a lovely lunch on the terrace of Herb McCarthy’s. When lunch was over, the foursome, virtually in a chorus, thanked my father, and added, “But next time, Opapa, please take us to Sip ’n Soda!”
