Former Bridgehampton School Superintendent Robert LaFountain died on April 19 at Tanner Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, Georgia. He was 88.
After attending the University of Alabama, Mr. LaFountain enlisted in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1942 and served three and a half years in England, where he met and married an army nurse, Alice Novitske. Following the end of World War II, he returned to his education, this time at the University of Massachusetts, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in language and literature. He went on to receive a master’s degree.
Mr. LaFountain had a 26-year career as a noted educator at Bridgehampton School, the first six years as an English teacher and the last 20 years as the superintendent of schools. After retiring in 1977, he worked for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services for five years, handling teacher certification. In addition, he worked for the Bridgehampton Candy Kitchen for 20 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Germaine Williamson of Sag Harbor; a son, Marc LaFountain of Georgia; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 1, at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in East Hampton.
