Silvio D. Catena, known to many as “Buppy,” died on February 13 at Treasure Coast Hospice House in Stuart, Florida. He was 73.
Mr. Catena was a resident of Hampton Bays, graduating from Hampton Bays High School and working as a commercial fisherman and the owner and captain of the “F/V Grayfin” out of Shinnecock. He was one of the first longliners, starting in the early ’70s. He was a police officer with the Hampton Bays Police Department before it was annexed by the Southampton Town Police Department. He also ran three video stores, Black Alley Video, with his son, Ted, and worked for many summers as a doorman at the Boardy Barn.
Mr. Catena is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maryanne (Jankowski); a son, Theodore “Ted” Catena of Hampton Bays; three grandchildren; Jean Louise, Kaylee and David; and their mother, Annie Dossiano. He is also survived by a brother, Richard Catena and wife Renee of Hampton Bays, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, David, in 1972.
Visiting was at J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home on February 19. A funeral service, conducted by the clergy of St. Rosalie’s Church, was held at the funeral home on February 20. A private cremation followed at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches.
