Former Sag Harbor resident Joseph R. Comfort Jr. dies at 53

Former Sag Harbor resident Joseph 
R. Comfort Jr. of Palm Bay, Florida, died on January 28 at his home. He was 53.

Born July 29, 1956, in Southampton to Joseph R. Comfort Sr. and Irene (née DeSant) Comfort, he worked as an auto mechanic and was an honorary 
member of the Sag Harbor Fire Department.

He is survived by a daughter, Kimberly A. Comfort of Hampton Bays; and two sons, Shawn M. Comfort of Hampton Bays and Jack E. Comfort of Florida.

Arrangements were under the direction of Yardley & Pino Funeral Home, and no services were planned.

Hampton Bays Beautification held its 39th annual Garden Party and Famous Auction at Oakland’s Restaurant on June 7. It has come to my attention that there is an effort afoot to move our beloved college windmill off our campus, where it has resided for many decades [“New Push To Move Southampton’s Oldest Windmill From College Campus Back to Village,” 27east.com, June 11]. There are approximately 10,000 Southampton College alumni. We have contributed to the area since 1963. The alums have become teachers, doctors, politicians, lawyers, scientists, athletes, nurses, bankers and business owners, just to name a few occupations. I am proud of all I have helped accomplish, starting with upgrading our volunteer fire and ambulance department’s outdated and aging equipment and restoring the morale of these two most important organizations.
