Former Southampton Resident Dorothy Schoen Dies December 30

Former longtime Southampton resident Dorothy Schoen died December 30, with family at her bedside, in Danville, California. She was 95.

Born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on October 3, 1918, she lived most of her life in Southampton and graduated from Southampton High School.

Ms. Schoen was a talented seamstress and served many clients in Southampton over several years. Later she became a telephone operator and worked for the telephone company over the old post office on Main Street. After her retirement from the telephone company, she began renting rooms to summer clientele. A “can do” woman, she could be found mowing her own lawns and almost anything else that was needed, survivors said. Ms. Schoen took daily brisk walks around Southampton village into her mid 70s. She was also an avid reader, a pastime she enjoyed for many years. Survivors said she was known to be a very kind and generous woman during her life and that her help was often sought out and given.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carl Schoen, a great-granddaughter, Abigail Walpole, and all eight of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Carol Kelly and husband John of California, Patricia Carlson and husband Rogner of South Carolina; and by four grandchildren, Carl Ford, John (Jack) Kelly, Hugh Walpole, Mary Kelly and their respective spouses. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in California at a later date.
