Joseph Grefig
Former Southampton resident Joseph Grefig died in his Boynton Beach, Florida, home on December 28. He was 94.
Born on September 6, 1918, Mr. Grefig was a radio operator during World War II serving in the U.S. Merchant Marine and for American Overseas Airlines, when it was nationalized for the war effort. He earned commendations for his radio communication expertise. He was on the last flight out of Berlin during the historic Berlin airlift.
Mr. Grefig initiated and spearheaded the purchase of Jamaica Bay in Boynton Beach and the conversion of the community to a resident-owned cooperative.
He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine. He is survived by three children, James and his wife Lenny Grefig of Croton-On-Hudson, Judith Aubin of Sacramento, and Kathy and husband Wayne Hachey of Virginia; three grandchildren, Tara, Kerry and Raphael; and four great-grandchildren, Johnny, Brittany, Trinity and Logan.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Boynton Memorial Chapel in Boynton Beach.
