Fragile Planet

James Ewing’s alarming letter regarding the negative effect of the current practices of land development on organic life couldn’t be more pressing [“Goals for the Garden,” Letters, February 9].

Increasingly, nature in all its manifestations, be it nonhuman animals, vegetation or natural habitats/environments, has increasingly become a commodity to be exploited, abused and discarded.

It seems as if there is no limit to human hubris, willful ignorance and greed, and, most tragically, no awareness that it is our planet with its atmosphere — itself a breathing, living organism — upon which we all depend.
