Fred G. Roffe
Fred G. Roffe of Hampton Bays died at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan on December 29 after a valiant battle with cancer.
He earned a bachelor’s degree at Georgia Tech and worked for 35 years as an engineer for Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage. For all his life, he summered in Hampton Bays and moved there full-time in 1981. He was the lieutenant commander and education officer for the Peconic Bay Chapter of the U.S. Power Squadron, and wrote for its monthly publication, “Tell Tale.” He was named teacher of the year and recipient of the national Chapman Award for the U.S. Power Squadron.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Fances M. (née Stuchin); two children, Christopher Roffe of Hampton Bays and Carolyn Thayer and husband Scott of Hampton Bays; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Olivia Thayer.
Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, January 2 andThursday, January 3, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A parish prayer service will begin at 3 p.m., also on Thursday, and Power Squadron services will take place later in the evening. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 4, at the Church of St. Rosalie on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays. Interment will follow at Good Ground Cemetery.
