Frederick H. Kampf II died peacefully at his home in Southampton on August 14. He was 84.

He was born on July 3, 1940, in Southampton, to Helen and John Kampf. He graduated from Southampton High School in 1958, and enlisted in the U.S. Army right after graduation. He proudly served his country.

He will be remembered by friends and family for his commitment, dedication, service, friendship, love for helping others, and warm welcoming persona. He was a gentle loving husband and father who always encouraged his children to pursue their dreams and was proud of every accomplishment they and his grandchildren achieved, his family said.

He was a dedicated member of the community as shown by his passion for his work at the Southampton Post Office, over 50 years of service in the Southampton Fire Department, and being a caretaker of many homes around Southampton.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen; his sons, Michael and Vincent; his daughter, Robin; his grandchildren, Michael, Joseph, Raelyn and Tyler; and his siblings, Robert, Betty Ann, Helen, Therese, and Mary Ann.

A wake was held on August 18 at The O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton. A Southampton Fire Department Firematic Service was held during the evening hours. A funeral Mass was celebrated on August 19 at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton, followed by full U.S. Army military honors. A private cremation followed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southampton Volunteer Fireman’s Benevolent Association Inc, PO Box 499 Southampton, NY 11969; or to the Center for Parkinson’s Disease at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (southampton.stonybrookmedicine.edu) in memory of Frederick H. Kampf II.

Still Alive

Now come the shortest days, and we offset the long nights with lights and little candles everywhere. In a show of determination and defiance, decor is how we get through the darkest days merrily. I do not rationalize the need to decorate, and I do not fight the urge. Instead, I consider what is durable and plentiful. If I hang it from a bespoke wire hook, will people grasp the symmetry and austere beauty? Will they flock to my booth at the craft market? We had a bumper garlic crop. And sales were slack. So, going into soup season, we’ve ... by Marilee Foster

Simply Not True

I write in reference to an article published by 27east.com dated December 6 [“Southampton Village Ethics Board Finds Trustee Robin Brown Violated Code With Attendance at Fundraisers”], regarding a decision by the Southampton Village Ethics Board erroneously finding that I violated the village’s code of ethics by attending two fundraisers. I recently attended a Metropolitan Opera event at which a friend of mine was an honoree for her 90th birthday, and a fundraiser hosted by the Peconic Baykeeper. Although nothing about attending either event violates the ethics code, I found myself subject to an investigation by the village’s Ethics Board ... by Staff Writer
