Fredric Alan Bennett of Quogue died on May 24 at Southampton Hospital of pancreatic cancer. He was 79. Mr. Bennett was born in New York City, where he graduated from the Barnard School for Boys before going on to Williams College, graduating with the class of 1955. He was active in the football programs of both schools. Upon graduation from Williams, Mr. Bennett served two years in the U.S. Army. He had a successful career in the paper industry, first as a vice president at RIS Paper Company and then at Gould Paper Company.
Upon retirement he relocated to live in Quogue year-round. He was a member of the Quogue Beach Club and the Quogue Field Club, an honorary Texas Ranger and a past member of La Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf. Survivors said Mr. Bennett had a presence in front of people and that few were as skilled in relating a story, limerick or epic poem in a way that held an audience.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carole Hubbard Bennett; his daughters, Juliette Bennett and Suzanne Bennett Harrison; sons-in law, Scott Greathead and Thomas Harrison; granddaughter, Jocelyn Harrison; and a brother, Roger Bennett of Maryland.
A memorial service will be held later this summer.
