Gary Peter DeLalio died on June 11 at the Westhampton Care Center following a long battle with multiple sclerosis. He was 66.

Mr. DeLalio was born on May 2, 1954 in Bethpage to Perry and Eileen DeLalio Sr.

He graduated from Bethpage High School in 1972, and Bentley College in 1976, majoring in business management.

Mr. DeLalio moved to Southampton in 1977 to work with his brother, Perry, and father in the family business, Southampton Coal and Produce.

Mr. DeLalio and then wife, Patti, raised their two children, Kate and Mike, in Southampton.

He received his master’s in gerontology from Southampton College in 1992.

Mr. DeLalio was a lifetime member of the Kiwanis Club, serving first as treasurer, then president from 1989 to 1990.

He volunteered for Respite, a visiting service for elderly Southampton residents, for a number of years.

As the years and his disease progressed, you could find Mr. DeLalio scooting along in his motorized wheelchair throughout Southampton Village attending programs at Rogers Memorial Library, his family recalled.

He was well known throughout the community, particularly to members of the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance, who came to his aid on any number of occasions, his family said.

Mr. DeLalio is survived by his brother, Perry DeLalio, Jr. and wife Sarah; two children Kate Turza and husband, Brian, and Mike DeLalio and wife, Keri; five grandchildren, Jameson and Charlotte DeLalio, and Molly, Callen and Brady Turza. He is also survived by his former spouse, Patti Staker, and the community which he adored, his family said.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. DeLalio’s name to the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, 102 Old Riverhead Road, Hampton Bays, NY 11946; and Southampton Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 5040, Southampton NY 11969.

A visitation will be held Thursday, July 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A graveside service will take place Friday, July 31 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.

Dangerous Liberty

With the Fourth of July on deck, and the national “No Kings” protests occurring recently, it’s worth taking a moment, in partisan times, to remind ourselves that dissent is patriotic, and protest is a core American principle. You might well disagree with what’s being said, depending on which group is protesting, or who is in power to face the protests. But the act of civil protest is a healthy part of democracy, and in fact is essential to its survival. And it’s hardly new.
