Gary Phelan of Riverhead, formerly of Westhampton Beach, died on Wednesday, July 30. He was 56.

Born on August 12, 1951, at Central Suffolk Hospital, now Peconic Bay Medical Center, in Riverhead to Robert and Katherine (née Bandrowski) Phelan, he graduated from Westhampton Beach High School and received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from West Virginia University.

He married Cindy Pendzick on December 7, 1986, at St. Isidore’s Roman Catholic Church in Riverhead and opened a pool cleaning business in Westhampton Beach, which he ran for more than 20 years. He later became a probation officer assistant for Suffolk County.

Mr. Phelan was an active member of the community. A former deputy mayor of Westhampton Beach, he was a life member of the Polish Town Civic Association, and served as a member of the Riverhead Democratic Committee.

He was an avid NASCAR and golf fan, and spent a year as an official caddy on the PGA tour.

Mr. Phelan is survived by his wife, Cindy; two sons, Adam and Eric, both of Riverhead; and a brother, Robert, of Yorktown Heights, New York.

He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Katherine.

A wake was held at the McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead on August 2 and 3. Funeral services were held at St. Isidore’s Roman Catholic Church in Riverhead on August 4; interment followed at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 120 Wall Street, 19th floor, New York, NY 10005 would be appreciated by the family.
