Genevieve Gadomski, Formerly Of Southampton, Dies July 6

author on Jul 11, 2016

Genevieve Gadomski, formerly of Southampton, died July 6, with her daughter at her side. She was a resident of Life Care Center of Melbourne, Florida, for the last two years of her life after a fall that incapacitated her.

Ms. Gadomski was born on January 14, 1921, in Brooklyn, to Marianna and Anthony Kaniecki, both of whom predeceased her. Her parents came to the United States from Poland and settled in Brooklyn. She attended Catholic school in Brooklyn until the fifth grade when her parents decided to return to Poland during the Depression, seeking a “better life.” After arriving in Poland they discovered an even poorer economy and her parents were not allowed to return to the U.S. She stayed in Poland working on the family farm until she was 16. Her parents sent her back to the U.S. to strive for a better life and to help them. She was on her own from that time on.

In 1941 she met the love of her life, Alex, at a dance in New York City. They were married a year later. In 1950 they decided to move to Southampton because they loved the clean fresh air and the water. They raised two daughters and settled comfortably in their new home.

Ms. Gadomski was a member of the Madam Curie Society of Our Lady of Poland Church and an active member of the parish until 2009, when she moved to Cape Canaveral, Florida, with her daughter and son-in-law. She was employed by The Meadow Club of Southampton as a laundress for more than 30 years. She was a founding resident of Sonata of Melbourne, which is an independent living facility. There she enjoyed living with other residents and had an active social life playing bingo and attending happy hours and hosting get-togethers in her apartment.

She was an avid knitter and also crocheted. She once made eight Irish knit sweaters for Christmas for her daughters, sons-in-law and four grandchildren. She started in August and was finished by Christmas.

She and her husband were married for almost 69 years and they enjoyed taking care of their home on Layton Avenue together.

Ms. Gadomski was predeceased by her husband; a brother, Edward Kaniecki; and a sister, Adela Kaniecki.

She is survived by two daughters, Pat Romanosky and husband Joe, Eleanor Knight and husband Stanley; four grandchildren and their spouses, Stanley and Gretchen Knight, Michael and Sharon Knight, Kristi and Brad Hilbert and Kara and Brian Williams; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a half-brother, Dr. Stanislaw Konarski and wife Ninka; and two nieces and their families who reside in Poland.

Funeral services were last week, under the direction of O’Connell Funeral home in Southampton. Burial was at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery in Southampton.

Fractures Showing on Southampton Village Board Over Issues Like Meeting Agendas, Records Release, Workforce Housing and More

There was a period of time, not too long ago, when the Southampton Village Board could be counted on to pass almost any resolution or legislation with a 5-0 vote. It happened so frequently, in fact, that many residents began to question if that kind of uniformity of thought was healthy for the village, or if it was a sign that the art of dissent had been lost, along with a willingness to thoughtfully examine both sides of any given issue. One thing’s been made clear in the second half of the calendar year — that period of smooth sailing ... 12 Dec 2025 by Cailin Riley
