George A. McHugh of East Quogue died on July 20 at the Westhampton Care Center, from complications of heart disease. He was 94.
Born on July 3, 1914, he was the son of immigrants Percy McHugh and Eva Nemitz, who hailed from County Clare, Ireland. The eldest of seven children, he worked his way up the ranks in Con Edison to help support his family. He entered the company as a water boy and retired as district supervisor in charge of Brooklyn and parts of Long Island.
Mr. McHugh served on a U.S. Navy battleship during World War II.
He married his true love, Ann Marie Miteratonda, on September 25, 1938, and the two enjoyed 62 years together until Mrs. McHugh’s death in December of 2000.
An avid reader, he loved challenging his intellect with weekly crossword puzzles. Survivors said he was a dedicated family man who will be remembered for his faithfulness, honesty and generosity.
Mr. McHugh is survived by a daughter, Frances Nill of East Quogue; two granddaughters, Jolain Ensler of Westhampton and April Nill-Boitano of East Quogue; and two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Ann Boitano and Anthony Boitano.
A wake was held on July 23 at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral service was held on July 24 at Saint Rosalie’s Roman Catholic Church in Hampton Bays, and interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Hampton Bays Public Library, 52 Ponquogue Avenue, Hampton Bays, NY 11946 would be appreciated by the family.
