George Arents Humphreys Jr. died at Southampton Hospital, surrounded by his family and friends, on March 2. He was 71.

Mr. Humphreys was the son of Hope Hildreth Humphreys and George Arents Humphreys, and the stepson of Clyde W. Deal. Always colorful and curious, survivors said, he was a lifelong resident of Southampton. From an early age, he was an avid reader, a passionate sailor and fearless world traveler. He was a fabulous gardener, terrible golfer and just an average fisherman, survivors said, adding that he was a completely devoted guardian of his dogs.

Mr. Humphreys served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1973. In 1993 he married the love of his life, Kelly Scammell.

He is survived by his son, Evan Stevens Humphreys; and four siblings, Faith, Hildreth, Inness and Whitaker. He was predeceased by his son, George Arents Humphreys III.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton
