George Edward Gosnell
George Edward “Ted” Gosnell of Patchogue, formerly of Remsenburg and Wantagh, died on January 3 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue after suffering a stroke in late December. He was 82.
Mr. Gosnell was born in Brooklyn to Lilian Conard Gosnell and Ralph Whitney Gosnell. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1949 until 1950. He was honorably discharged and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business at Bowdoin College in 1953. He married his first wife Alice Baker of Suffield, Connecticut, in 1953 and the couple had a son, David Whitney Gosnell.
In 1960, Mr. Gosnell married his second wife, Janet Everett Rodger, of Richmond Hill, Queens. They had three children, William Conard Gosnell, Margery Everett Gosnell and Daniel Whitney Gosnell. He resided in Wantagh for 47 years, spending summer weekends at his home in Remsenburg.
Although he began his career in business as a stockbroker and later a real estate broker, he was soon attracted to the arts. He was a talented artist who was acclaimed by his friends for his sensitive pen and ink drawings, including those in the Westhampton and Southampton Social Guides for many years in the 1970s. His love of art brought him into the field of art collecting and sales. He enjoyed finding works by little-known artists and introducing them in multiple venues. Among his most rewarding art collecting experiences was his discovery of Frank Brangwyn’s only remaining drawings of the original murals in the first, pre-fire, Houses of Parliament building in London, England.
Mr. Gosnell moved to McPeak’s Assisted Living in Patchogue when in his 80s.
Mr. Gosnell is survived by his four children, David, William, Margery and Daniel; and his seven grandchildren, Whitney Gosnell, Drew Gosnell, Daniel Qua, Leland Qua, Natalie Mae Gosnell, Daniel Gosnell and Mia Gosnell. In 1948 he was predeceased by both a brother, Jack, to meningitis, and a sister, Ruth, to hepatitis.
The family received friends at the Follett and Werner Funeral Home on January 5. A funeral service was held at the Remsenburg Presbyterian Church on January 6. Interment followed at the Remsenburg Cemetery.
