George H. Cunningham
Former Southampton resident George H. Cunningham of Manorville died on October 10. He was 100.
Mr. Cunningham was the grandson of James Cunningham, an Irishman who survived a shipwreck off Mecox Bay and later made his home in Sag Harbor during the 1840s. His parents were George and Violet Cunningham of Sag Harbor.
Mr. Cunningham served in World War II on the U.S. Hamul in the Pacific Theater during the battle of Okinawa. Upon his discharge, he worked as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Life in Southampton and in Brooklyn for 35 years.
After retirement, he divided his time between Briny Breezes, Florida, and Manorville. An avid golfer, according to friends and family, he was a founding member of the Southampton Golf Club.
Those close to him also recently recalled his great sense of wit and humor and his ability to “always enjoy a good laugh” throughout his life.
He is survived by three daughters, Michigan State Senator Nancy Cassis of Michigan, Judith Cunningham of Indiana and Melinda Cunningham of Florida; a son, Michael Cunningham of Sag Harbor; six grandchildren, Caroline and Drew Covert, Francesca, Raphael and Gabriel Forestieri and Travis Cunningham; and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Cunningham; two brothers, Maurice and Thomas; and two sisters, Virginia Canapary and Margaret Daniels.
The family received visitors on October 18 at Wesche Funeral Home in Center Moriches. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
