George J. Johnston
George Johnston of Hampton Bays died at Riverhead Care Center on August 3. He was 84.
Born in Flushing on May 9, 1927, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon graduating from Brooklyn Academy Prep at 17 years of age. He was discharged with the rank of commissaryman third class.
Mr. Johnston was an active member of the American Legion for 54 years and was past post commander of Charles Wagner Post in Hicksville and past commander of Hand-Aldrich Post 924 in Hampton Bays, serving for five consecutive years. He also served for many years as vice commander of Suffolk County Fifth Division, comprised of the seven posts of Eastern Long Island. He rendered more than 60 years of service to God and country in his naval and legion careers, survivors said.
He was an active member of the Irish American Society of the Hamptons, Michael Collins Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Hampton Bays Council of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus John Shea Assembly, and the Holy Name Society of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Rosalie.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Joan; his son, Brian and his wife Susan; and grandson, Gregory. He was predeceased by his brother Delmore, who was also a World War II veteran.
The family received friends at R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home on Thursday, August 4. A funeral Mass was conducted by Father Joy Varkey at the Church of St. Rosalie. The funeral procession, led by the American Legion Riders, proceeded to Calverton National Cemetery for the interment.
