George J. Schoeppler of Wallingford, Vermont, and East Quogue died on December 9, 2017, surrounded by his family and friends. He was 53.

Born June 19, 1964, in Huntington, to George and Janet Schoeppler, he loved to help others and was dedicated to his career as a Westhampton Beach Police officer and then as an EMT in Rutland, Vermont. Survivors said he loved and lived life to the fullest, was always extremely active and practiced positivity in everything he did, adding that he possessed a strong love for all God’s creatures, great and small.

He continued to have an optimistic outlook, even after a devastating diagnosis, and left behind an inspirational legacy for all who knew him.

Mr. Schoeppler was survived by his wife of 25 years, Delma Schoeppler. In addition to his mother, Janet, he is survived by his father-in-law, Thomas J. Tully and wife Flo Donahue; his brothers, Michael and Paul, and their wives Carrie and Alina Schoeppler; sisters and brother-in-law, Patricia, MaryBeth and Thomas Tully; and nieces and nephews, Ella, Nick and Ashley Schoeppler, Sydney and Audrey Alverson, Denis and Melissa Carpenter, Bryan and Kerrie Carpenter, Anthony and Tara Vasquez and Destiny Guichard; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by his best friends, his “brothers from other mothers,” Trevor Gonce, Glenn Bullock and Jason McMunn and their wives. He was predeceased by his father, George; his grandmother, Hattie; and mother-in-law, Delma Tully. He also leaves his beloved dogs, Jack and Holly.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, the East End Hospice Kanas Center in Quiogue, or any charity of choice.

A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, December 16 at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays.

This is the kind of community partnership that underscores the creative legacy of the Hamptons, proving that real-life experiences can be life changing. Love Thy Neighbor?

Whatever happened to brotherly love? Despite what we see in national politics, how we treat others matters. Close to home, I’m referring to the decision of Southampton Town to again sue the Shinnecock Nation to prevent them from developing commerce on their land [“Sticker Shock at Cost of Lawsuit to Town Over Shinnecock Gas Station Project,” 27east.com, June 4]. What is opposed are billboards and a gas station, both of which would economically benefit the tribe. The Shinnecock Nation is fed up with the treatment by the Town of Southampton and the economic cost of these lawsuits. Sadly, the relationship ... by Staff Writer

Shunning the Gifts of the Sun

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency — our former congressman, Lee Zeldin — was positively giddy last week when he announced that he was killing his own agency’s ability to limit pollution by the U.S. oil and gas industry. “We are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion to … unleash American energy, bring auto jobs back to the U.S.,” Mr. Zeldin crowed. Who knew? The EPA’s job is to help the oil and gas and auto industries? Even if we choose to dismiss prevailing science, which shows that burning fossil fuels pollutes the ... by Biddle Duke

Some Facts

I thought I would respond to a letter titled “Defies Logic” [July 31] that criticized one of your columnists as an “environmental alarmist.” Sadly, global temperatures on average have risen nearly 3 degrees Fahrenheit, mostly in the last 65 years, and in places like the Arctic they are 8 to 10 degrees warmer during the summer. Sea levels have risen by 7 to 10 inches in just the last few decades. Those are facts that almost all scientists attribute to fossil fuel use. Projections over the next few decades are for more of these type of increases. Temperatures may even ... by Staff Writer
