George Martin “Marty” Robinson of Southampton died at home on November 15, 2016, after a long illness. He was 81.

Mr. Robinson was born August 22, 1935, at Southampton Hospital to James and Kathleen (Aylward) Robinson. He graduated from Southampton High School in 1953. The Aylward family owned and operated riding academies in Southampton on Majors Path and in New York City, across from Central Park. He was married to Evelyn Bennett for 22 years and had seven children. He married Sandra Alippo on April 12, 1981, recently celebrating 35 years together.

He started in the automotive business working for his father-in-law, Royce Bennett, and spent time learning about Mercedes Benz in Germany early in his career. He took over the family business, Bennett Motors, which became Kar Kare Motors. He worked for a time at Country Imports of Southampton, became a partner in Hampton Auto and then finally opened Star Service on Mariner Drive in Southampton, which he operated until he died.

Mr. Robinson was baptized at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton.

He was a member of the North Sea Fire Department for 52 years, joining in 1964. He was second assistant chief from 1967 to 1969 and chief from 1969 to 1971. He was Fireman of the Year in 1979 and 1980. He was elected as a fire commissioner in 1981 and held this position until 1995.

Mr. Robinson was proud to have his sons and grandchildren follow in his footsteps as members of the North Sea Fire Department, and his wife and daughters-in-law have joined the Ladies Auxiliary.

He was an avid boater, spending many hours with family and friends on Peconic Bay aboard the SanMartin, traveling as far as Block Island.

He was known for his love for cats, including “Carol the Cat” and “Larry of Mexico.” He, along with his children, could often be found at Agawam Park feeding the ducks on a Sunday morning.

Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife, Sandra; and his children, Kevin Robinson and wife Joanne, Debra McKay and husband Bruce, Mike Robinson and partner Audra Wilson, Christopher Robinson and wife Jackie, all of Southampton, Kathleen Fiore and husband Richard and Tina Robinson, all of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Debra Robinson; and stepson, Frank Harrison, all of Southampton. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Kathleen Robinson; and a son, Craig Robinson of Southampton.

⭐️ : To Cami Hatch, for reminding everyone why learning to swim and lifeguard training are important. The East Hampton graduate, now a University of Tennessee student, has been studying in Italy and was visiting Malta recently when she heard a fellow beachgoer whistling. “That whistle unlocked a new mode in my brain. For lifeguards, when you hear a whistle it means, ‘Heads up — get ready to go,’ as Big John and Johnny Ryan have instilled in us over the years,” she said, shouting out her lifeguard instructors. The combination of the new Ken Burns documentary on the American Revolution and the rosy image of the first Thanksgiving led me to recall a 1778 event that exemplifies the true relationship between the white settlers and the Indigenous population. And that relationship spread west as the settlers did. During the war, the Stockbridge Mohicans, along with the Oneida, Tuscarora and a handful of other Indigenous nations, allied with the American colonists in their struggle for independence from Britain. Many of these communities hoped that their military support would ensure recognition of their sovereignty and protection of their lands. Instead, ... by Tom Clavin

Will Governor Kathy Hochul sign, or again veto, a bill to protect horseshoe crabs that again passed by large majorities in the State Legislature earlier this year? Hochul vetoed the same bill last year. She claimed then that the Horseshoe Crab Protection Act was “well intentioned,” but their management should best be left with the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation. She said the DEC has “significant rules and regulations regarding commercial and recreational fishing in the state.” It currently has an annual quota of 150,000 horseshoe crabs that can be taken. Environmentalists have been actively calling on Hochul to sign ... by Karl Grossman
