Gertrude Clare O’Connell, longtime resident of Westhampton Beach, died September 25, 2018, in Clemmons, North Carolina. She was 84. Born Gertrude Clare Freye on October 20, 1933, to Joseph and Elenore Freye of the Rosedale, Queens, New York, joining a sister, Elenore. On June 4, 1955, she married Albert R. O’Connell, also of Rosedale. In 1958 they moved to Westhampton Beach.

Gertrude is survived by her sons, Albert of Westhampton Beach, Gerard of Stony Point, NY, Joseph of Flanders, Matthew of South Carolina; a daughter, Mary of North Carolina; her grandchildren, Terrance, Ian, Claire, Aidan, Shea, Rose, Joey and Haley; and nieces, Elaine and Maura of Florida.

Visitation will be on Thursday, October 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Werner Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. A funeral Mass will take place on Friday, October 5, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Immaculate Conception in Quiogue, followed by interment at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.

Memorial donations may be made to the Art Dawg Scholarship that will support aspiring young local artists at Westhampton Beach Schools, Box 1212, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978, or New York Hope Lodge, 132 West 32nd Street, New York, New York 10001.
