Gertrude P.C. Brown, a resident at Westminster Canterbury in Virginia, died Sunday, October 16, 2016. She was 90.
Mrs. Brown lived in Bridgehampton until attending college at New York State College for Teachers in Albany. After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees, she taught in several Long Island schools until moving to Virginia, where she taught in Tazewell County and then at New London Academy in Bedford. She was a life member of Virginia Education Association and National Education Association, and belonged to the Lynchburg branch of American Association of University Women where she was historian for a number of years.
Surviving are her two children, Ralph W. Brown III and wife Paula of Louisiana, and Janice B. Martinez and husband Eddie of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Shana Shrader and husband Jon of Virginia, Anna Stephen and husband James of England, Reece Martinez of Virginia, Zoe Brown of Louisiana, and Ashby Brown of Louisiana; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Emerson Shrader of Virginia; a sister-in-law, Audrey Coslick of Bridgehampton; two nieces, Evelyn Vercase of Bridgehampton and Nancy Bennett and husband Al of Bridgehampton; and one great-niece, Wendy Bennett and husband Michael Chapman of Mt. Sinai.
She was predeceased by a brother, John Arnold Coslick; and a great-granddaughter, Grace Shrader.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Canterbury at a later date.
