Get Clover

Your “Water Hogs” article [“Water Hogs of the Hamptons 2024: Superusers Raise Costs for All,” Residence, 27east.com, July 11] serves as an inspiring nudge to find not only what the top 25 users can do but what we all can do to significantly reduce our water consumption and, in the process, kick-start our own regenerative landscape.

Just switching from grass to clover drastically reduces watering, mowing, fertilizers and pesticides. And it brings in the pollinators. Another notion is to trade out some of our lawns for native pollinator gardens.

While we are at it, let’s convince the villages and towns to replace all public grass patches with clover. The annoying noise of even the electric mowers will be just a memory.

Clover is available in a number of sizes and colors. Check for non-GMO varieties. Perfect Earth Project’s website talks about the many benefits of native plants and has an article on where to source native plants. For native pollinator seeds, Vermont Wildflower Seeds is great.

Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe says the most important thing we can do to effect change is to talk about it. So as we move in this direction, let’s all share what we are up to. We will create a beautiful new landscape aesthetic — and the water table of the East End will be rising soon.
