Gloria Westerhoff passed away peacefully at her Southampton, NY home early Christmas morning. She was born on February 11, 1925 in Brooklyn to Frank and Marion Dietz. She graduated from Bay Ridge High then became a secretary for Sidney Blumenthal and Co. in Manhattan.

A friend of her mother’s invited her to visit Southampton where she was introduced to John Westerhoff. The family story says that he sold his horse to buy her an engagement ring. She soon left Manhattan to work at the family’s restaurant. Gloria spent most of her professional life as a hostess at John Duck’s Restaurant, where she was a familiar and welcoming face. Gloria and her sister-in-law, Fran Westerhoff, were always ready to greet customers to John Duck’s, especially on busy holiday weekends. Gloria was a woman who lived life to the fullest and on her terms. She was funny, always ready with a colorful joke or a witty comment to lighten the mood. She was interesting, her experiences and insights making for captivating conversations. Her stories were legendary.

Winter months would find her in the Florida Keys, with a drink in her hand, soaking in the sun and the laid-back lifestyle she adored. She also found great joy and relaxation there, where she spent many memorable vacations fishing with her husband and the many guests who came to visit.

She was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, which she attended regularly every Sunday morning.

She had a love for crossword puzzles and the game Words with Friends. This love for words and puzzles was a testament to her sharp mind. Gloria was also an avid Jeopardy fan, not only watching the show but answering a daily Jeopardy question on her desk calendar.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John, and their son, John Jr., whose memories she cherished till her last breath. She is survived by her children, Susan Armusewicz (Robert), Jan Westerhoff (Judy Parant) and Mark Westerhoff (Elizabeth). Her legacy extends to her grandchildren, Jennifer Warner (Kirk), Brian Armusewicz (Marcy), Dyan Westerhoff, Christian Westerhoff, and Nicolas Westerhoff. The lineage continues with her great-grandchildren, Kyle Warner, Wesley Warner, Avery Armusewicz, and Claire Armusewicz, all of whom will carry forth her memory in their hearts.

Those who knew Gloria would describe her as funny and interesting. She had a unique ability to find humor in the everyday and could always be relied upon for a compelling story or a thoughtful insight.

Donations can be made in her name to East End Hospice and the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton.

All local stories matter. They matter to some portion of readers, and they certainly matter to the journalists sharing them. But there’s always an article that hits home a little more than others. Bill Sutton, who is the managing editor of The Express News Group, was never comfortable being in the pages of our newspapers. But he agreed, because his story is so important — and can help so many others — because he needs a donor kidney. He’s not alone: There are some 100,000 people in the United States alone who need life-saving organ donations. It’s testament to modern ... 4 Jun 2025 by Editorial Board

Nearby are The National, which dates to 1911, and Shinnecock Hills, founded in 1891, the celebrity courses that every golfer knows and dreams of playing.
