Going With Sundy

I am an independent voter who doesn’t subscribe to a red or blue voting line. Rather, the candidate alone earns my vote.

Just recently, we saw the GOP bury George Santos for embellishing his resume (embellishing is an understatement). Next, we saw the local Dems anoint John Leonard for Southampton Town Council, essentially ignoring some specious pieces of his background.

But now for something completely different: an attempt by the Democrats to unseat a multi-term clerk who has earned their endorsements for multiple elections in the past.

Sundy Schermeyer is the clerk — check out her website, Shermeyer4townclerk.com. Years of excellent service to the community, and a really good clerk. An impressive, spotless record.

Out of curiosity, I tried to verify the background of her challenger, who, on the Southampton Democrats’ website, boasts an impressive CV. Unfortunately, the background listed and the accomplishments earned have very little to do with requirements for the office of the town clerk. Sports graphics for television is not part of the clerk’s job description.

But another claim caught my eye: A Peabody Award for Hurricane Sandy coverage? That went to ABC Television’s news division. The award was accepted by the deputy managing editor of that news division. There were over a hundred ABC employees who worked tirelessly on Hurricane Sandy coverage. They all shared in that award. Seems a tad misleading to claim it as your own.

Google searches come up empty as well when one attempts to confirm his claims. Scrubbed? I would hope not, but in today’s world of instant information, it’s surely a puzzlement.

Two things are of paramount importance when a party nominates a candidate: vetting and qualifications. This opposing candidate requires greater depth for both.

I’m going with Sundy.
