Gorham Dozier of Southampton died on September 4. He was 76.

Mr. Dozier was born on August 4, 1940, to the late Clara Archie Dozier and Melvin Dozier in Currituck County, North Carolina, and attended Currituck Union Public School. Throughout high school, he was very athletic and an avid basketball player, and he also enjoyed woodworking class. After graduating in 1958, he moved to Philadelphia, where he found employment as an elevator operator. He often reminisced about the time he spent there. He eventually relocated to Southampton.

In Southampton, Mr. Dozier worked for Cancellieri’s Drug Store as a pharmacy manager. He also was the manager of Highway 24 in Riverhead. In his later years, he ran his own landscaping business.

Mr. Dozier was affectionately known as “Buddy” and “Dap Dan.”

Raised in a Christian home, he joined Parksville AME Zion Church in Camden, North Carolina and, after moving to Southampton, he was baptized and became a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a member of the male chorus and was president of the usher board. He also served as a marshal for the Eastern Baptist Association.

Survivors said he often visited and prayed for the sick, and that he had a bubbly, jovial personality that could brighten up a room. He loved spending time with “the boys” down at the local McDonalds; the employees there always seemed happy to see him arrive.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Vernon, Marcel and Lewis; a sister, Catherine; and two sons, Larry and Darryl.

He is survived by a twin sister, Gloria Cannon; a brother, Joseph Dozier; a son, Darrin Dozier; two sisters-in-law, Roxanne Dozier and the Reverend Delores Dozier; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A wake was held at the Brockett Funeral Home on September 8, and a funeral on September 9 at the First Baptist Church of Southampton, followed by interment at Southampton Cemetery.
