The Reverend Dr. Robert W. Battles Jr., 78, died at the Shell Point Retirement Community in Ft. Myers, Florida, on Saturday, January 7, 2017. A funeral service was held at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, Florida, on January 13. He will be buried in Edgewood Cemetery in Bridgehampton at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 28. Reverend Peter Sulyok from Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church will officiate at a short graveside service.
Reverend Battles served as the 12th pastor of Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church from 1967 to 1975. Following the tradition of the pastors of the church, he was active in the local community. He served as president of the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center and on the Migrant Committee of the Long Island Council of Churches. He was the secretary of the South Fork Clergy Fellowship and a member of the Ministerial Relations Committee of the Presbytery.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter Steph and husband Thomas Johnson; and a granddaughter, Olive.
Local funeral arrangement are under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
