Gretchen (Neuss) Haberland died on March 29, 2018, of cancer, surrounded by family at her home in Quogue. She was 78.
Ms. Haberland, known as “Grootch,” was an avid gardener. Visitors could not leave her home without a jar of pickles, zucchini bread or bag of tomatoes that came from her garden. She was a talented painter who sold her local landscapes at the Quogue Art Show. She loved football, especially the Dallas Cowboys, and ran the football pool for several years. She was an Agatha Christie fan and a big reader, always passing down books to friends, and was a whiz at crossword puzzles. Survivors said she was beautiful, kind, generous and loving, old-fashioned yet ahead of her time.
Ms. Haberland is survived by her sister, Linda Martin; and her children, Gus Adams, Francesca Miranda (Claudio), Roxanne Ruiz and Gypsy Adams (George Torres); and grandchildren, Isabella, Spencer, Beatrice and Eleanor.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice.
