Here’s something to get all fired up about! The Southampton Press website, 27east.com, is having a “Beefed-Up Backyard Barbecue Contest” and organizers are looking for the best and boldest barbecues in the Hamptons. Three gift certificates will be awarded.Just upload a photograph of you and your set-up at www.27east.com/photo-gallery/bbq-contest.cfm and tell them why you are the king, or queen, of the grill. Judging will take place on Monday, August 26, so get your grill on!

Barbara Cascia is having her annual August sale over at Fandango boutique at 48 West Montauk Highway. Everything in the shop is 20 percent off, so be sure and stop in.

Congrats to Trevor Craker! Trevor has graduated after serving 10 months with the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).

Trevor was part of a team that completed a series of six- to eight week-long projects in different communities across the country. NCCC projects support the environment, energy conservation, infrastructure improvement, disaster relief, and urban and rural development.

A graduate of Hampton Bays High School, Trevor is the son of Julian and Jane Craker.

Let’s hear it for Emma Squires! Emma was the 2013 recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience. The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement. Emma is a student at the Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead.

Raise a glass to Walter and Carol Lane. They celebrated 66 years of marital bliss last Thursday, August 8.

Happy birthday to William Knotoff! Will celebrates his cake-and-candle (and present) day on Monday, August 19.

The second annual Tom Corrigan Scholarship Softball Tournament is slated for next Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20 and 21, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5350 on Montauk Highway in Quogue.

Many of my readers may remember Tom Corrigan as the proprietor of Tom McBrien’s Restaurant and Pub here in Hampton Bays. Tom lost his battle with leukemia two years ago in July.

Fourteen local and New York City teams will compete to raise money for a scholarship that will go to area high school students in Tom’s memory. Games will be played between 9:30 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. both days. All are invited to watch for free.

In addition, 50/50 raffle tickets are being sold for $5 apiece, or five for $20. You can purchase them at Skidmore’s, Spring & Summer Activities, Doran’s, Tide Runners and the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce office. The winner need not be present.
