Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man” (or woman). —Benjamin Franklin

Happy new year, dear friends and neighbors!

I recently mentioned that the Hampton Bays Historical and Preservation Society was selling Christmas ornaments with a likeness of “Hercules at Canoe Place Inn” on it. Well, I did a little research and learned that the Hercules bust that stood across the street from CPI was carved from a single piece of cedar at a cost of $1,500 for the USS Ohio, the first ship launched from the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1820.

Following the ship’s retirement, the figurehead was sold at a military surplus auction for $10 to the Aldrich family of Aquebogue. Then it went to Miles Carpenter, owner of the Canoe Place Inn, for $15, where it stood for decades. And, finally, it was acquired by Mr. Melville and deeded to the Ward Melville Heritage Organization.

You can actually go and see the figurehead of Hercules, which is housed in the Hercules Pavilion that’s located across Dock Road to the west of the Three Village Inn, near Stony Brook Harbor in Stony Brook. Call 751-2244 for more information.

A Worthy Cause: The “Haiti Houses” project was the brainchild of art teachers Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida. Locally, Hampton Bays Middle School fifth through eighth grade students have been creating “Haiti Houses” pins with visual arts teacher Kathy Dayton. Made out of recycled materials, the handcrafted pins are being sold for $5 at school district events. The kids will be working throughout the year on this fundraiser. Check it out online at haitihouses.org.

The grades are in from Northeastern University and Julia King, a graduate of the Hampton Bays Class of 2010, is not only on the dean’s list. She is just 78/1000ths of a point away from a perfect 4.0. Wow! Congratulations, Julia!

Amanda Coruzzi, a junior at Hampton Bays High School, will have her still life digital photography on display this month at the Hampton Bays Public Library. Kim Coruzzi will also have her acrylic and oil paintings featured in a show titled “Faces, Flowers & Flights of Fancy.” This is the first time that the Coruzzis are exhibiting their work.

Need Help Quitting?: Did you make a new year’s resolution to quit smoking? Well, here’s something that might be of help. The Suffolk County Department of Health is offering a free six-week “Learn to be Tobacco Free” program starting today, Thursday, January 6, at 6 p.m., at the Hampton Bays Public Library. The course runs through February 10 with a “class reunion” on February 24. Call 728-6241 or stop by the circulation desk to sign up.

The Southampton Town Youth Bureau is holding open auditions for its “Hampton Idol” competition tomorrow, Friday, January 7, from 4 until 8:30 p.m., at the Southampton Town Community Center at 25 Ponquogue Avenue.

And the Youth Bureau’s Ski and Snowboard Trip to Belleayre Mountain is planned for Saturday, January 22. The cost is $80 per person and that includes round-trip transportation, a lift ticket and lunch. There’s an additional equipment rental fee of $25. The bus will depart from Red Creek Park at 4:30 a.m. and return at approximately 9 p.m.

For more info about either of these events, call 702-2425 or log on at southamptontownny.gov and go to the Department Directory, Human Services/Youth Bureau.

Sign Up Now: East End Little League is holding registration for boys and girls who are interested in playing baseball and softball on Saturday, January 8, from 10 a.m. until noon, at the Quogue Veterans of Foreign Wars post, located at 129 Montauk Highway. Forms will be distributed in the elementary school and first-year players must bring their birth certificates.

Hope you were able to get some good snowman pics last week. Send them, along with the artist’s name, age, address and contact number to: “Snowman Contest,” Town of Southampton Parks and Recreation Department, 6 Newtown Road, Hampton Bays, NY 11946. Or e-mail the photo to parks&recdept@southamptontownny.gov. Questions? Call 728-8585.
