We spotted our first osprey last week, right on cue. It won’t be long now before the dark-eyed junco pulls up stakes and heads north for its breeding grounds. It is time to “spring ahead” again, folks. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before retiring on Saturday night.

I know that many of my readers will remember Donna Giancontieri. She was a longtime resident of Hampton Bays, a reporter for The Southampton Press, and also wrote the Friends and Neighbors column for many years. Donna now hangs her hat in Greenport. Seven years ago in 2009, Donna was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Donna just celebrated a milestone: five years since she has had to have chemotherapy or needed a bone biopsy.

Every day, statistically, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer in Suffolk County. And every four minutes someone is diagnosed in the United States. Donna and her husband, Lou, will be running in the San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll Half-Marathon in June to raise money for the Long Island Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). LLS helps with expensive co-payments, shares information and supports research for new treatments and clinical trials. To learn more about the cause, please visit pages.teamintraining.org/li/rnr12/louanddonna. Happy trails, Donna!

Happy birthday to you, Deanna (Devon) Figari! Deanna’s day to shine is today, March 10.

Let’s have a big shout-out for the Hampton Bays High School Leos Club! The students conducted a Valentine’s Day chocolate heart sale and raised $435. That money was donated this week to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Sweet!

Congrats to Richard Mistretta and Bernard DeMasi! Rich and Bernie just celebrated 16 years in business together at The Garage, 171 West Montauk Highway, right here in Hampton Bays. You guys do a great job! Thank you!

Congratulations are also in order for my husband, Ron Holthaus. Ron obtained a perfect score on his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) road test last week. I am so very proud of you! XO

Let’s hear it for Hampton Bays High School junior Tyler FayConsolo! Tyler was named the Marine Military Academy’s February 2016 Cadet of the Month for the Delta Company. He received this award for his exemplary attitude, conduct and leadership.

The first-year cadet has his sights on attending SUNY Cortland to study exercise science or fitness development. Proud parents are Cathleen and Josephine FayConsolo.

Restoration of the Lyzon Hat Shop is well under way with a grand opening in the works for this summer. As part of the Hampton Bays Historical Society’s Hats on for Lyzon campaign, the community is being encouraged to “Snap a Hat for History!”

Take a photo of yourself, your family, friends and neighbors or co-workers, all wearing hats, in front of a local landmark and post it to the society’s Facebook page at Hampton Bays Historical Society. Get out and create some hat hysteria!

The Suffolk County Department of Labor is hosting a Job Fair tomorrow, Friday, March 11, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., at the Hampton Bays Public Library, 52 Ponquogue Avenue.

The CAC is the official line of communication between the Southampton Town Board and our community. Residents can inform town officials of many concerns, including repairs needed to roads or parks, quality of life issues like graffiti blooms and overcrowded houses, or give ideas for future projects that would improve the community overall. All are invited and encouraged to attend.

Preregistration for the Hampton Bays School District’s kindergarten 2016-17 school year is now ongoing through Friday, April 1. To be eligible, your child must be 5 years old on or before December 1, 2016. For more information, please call Maria Schmidt at (631) 723-2100, extension 5107.
