November’s full moon was named the beaver moon by the colonists and the Algonquin tribe because this was the time to set the beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm, winter furs. It was also called the frost moon by Native Americans. This week’s “super moon” is the largest and fullest moon that has been seen since 1948. It will not come this close to Earth again until November 25, 2034. Keep your eyes to the skies, folks!

Happy birthday wishes are going out this week to Diane Devon on Sunday, November 20. Beth Fox’s cake-and-candle day is on Monday, November 21. And Mary Achilich’s special day falls on Wednesday, November 23. Live it up, gals!

Let’s hear it for Maud Kramer! Maud was recently presented an award for her 20 years of service to the Hampton Bays Beautification Association.

I had the pleasure of attending the “Salute to Our Hampton Bays Veterans” event last week at the Hampton Bays Public Library. Thank you to veterans William Owens, Charlie Shields, Norm Friedman, Paul Dargan, Richard Mongiello, Joseph Lach, John Ryan, Peter Schlesinger and Charlie Bivona. And thank you to the library and Panera Bread for the very nice program and lunch.

While I am speaking about our veterans, the Hampton Bays School District is flying the American flag this month in honor of World War II veteran Robert T. Murray.

Born in the Bronx, Mr. Murray attended La Salle Academy. In 1951 he was drafted into the Army and assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and was trained and jump-qualified in parachuting. He completed 15 jumps in two years.

While stationed at Fort Bragg, he served as a radioman, carrying the radio and making calls for the platoon leader or the company commander. During that time, he drove a captain in a convoy from Lometa, Texas, to Camp Drum near Watertown, New York.

After returning to Fort Bragg, he was given the opportunity to fly to Mitchel Field on Long Island where he was able to see his fiancée, Catherine Bianchini.

Mr. Murray was then offered a promotion to sergeant if he would re-enlist, but he declined. In 1953, he returned home and married Catherine. They raised three children and are the proud grandparents of six grandchildren.

Upon his retirement in 1975 from the Tip Top Bakery and Wonder Bread, Mr. Murray and his wife moved to Hampton Bays and bought a winter home in Florida. They now spend their time between Florida and Hampton Bays pursuing the love of his life (after his wife!)—golf.

Eighty-six third- and fourth-graders at our Hampton Bays Elementary School were recently inducted into the school’s K-Kids community service organization. The program, coordinated by teacher Kaitlyn Roche, meets before school once a month to organize fundraisers benefitting a variety of community organizations.

Under the direction of school counselor Laurie O’Halloran, OWL (Outstanding Willing Leaders) Club members recently held their annual new student welcome breakfast.

More than 35 new students have been enrolled at the Hampton Bays Middle School and this breakfast was an opportunity to provide support as they become acquainted with the school.

This sounds like a good time for a great cause!

A “Girls Night Out” event to benefit the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital is planned for tomorrow evening, Friday, November 18, from 7 until 10 p.m., at Gurney’s Inn in Montauk.

Ralph Macchio, the Karate Kid himself, will be on hand to share his experiences and behind-the-scenes stories at a movie screening of “The Karate Kid” on Saturday, November 19, at 7 p.m., at the Southampton High School, 141 Narrow Lane, in Southampton.
