My thoughts are with all the people who were in the path of Hurricane Matthew last week. Hopefully, many have been able to return back home, safe and sound.I have a confession to make. For the last 10 years, I’ve been living in the dark ages with one of the first flip-top phones ever made. My “Flipper,” a Nokia, has served me well.

Last week, however, I upgraded to a new (for me) iPhone 4, and I must say I did not know what I was missing. It was love at first gigabyte! Just amazing to have a tiny little computer right at your fingertips.

I think that when my husband, Ron, asked me if I wanted to have his old phone, he may have created a monster. No worries, though. I’ll never get a DWT (driving while texting) because I have enough trouble just getting my thumbs on the right keys. LOL (laugh out loud)!

Let’s hear it for It Takes a Village preschool! The school recently earned national recognition as a Certified Nature Explore Classroom from the Nature Explore program, which is a partnership between the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation. It Takes a Village is currently the only preschool in Suffolk County, and one of very few in New York State, that has this certification.

For those of you who are not familiar, It Takes a Village was a collaboration between three local moms—Maryann McCormack, Hilary Rose and Michelle Kelly—who were seeking quality education for their own children and for those within our community.

The school’s unique outdoor classroom setting offers interactive elements like musical instruments made of natural materials, garden or pathway areas, and natural materials for building and creating art.

It also inspires hands-on activity, creativity, play and plenty of time to explore the natural world. If you’d like to see what It Takes a Village is all about, call 631-594-5269, or log on at ittakesavillagehb.com.

A grand opening celebration is planned for our new Good Ground Park this Saturday, October 15, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., behind Main Street off of Squiretown Road. There’ll be a petting zoo, pumpkin and face painting, live music and dance performances, lots of activities for the kids and local food truck vendors.

Parking and shuttle service will be available from both the Hampton Bays elementary and middle schools, at 70-72 Ponquogue Avenue. In case of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, October 16, at the same time. Come on out and enjoy this free, fun-filled day!

Would you like to save money on energy bills, reduce the risk of local power failures and save the environment all at the same time? Representatives of the new Southampton Town Tri-energy program will also be on hand this Saturday, October 15, at the Good Ground Park opening. To learn more, log on at www.tri-energy.org
