VIEWPOINT: Providing Housing for Veterans in Need Is New York Doing Its Duty

BY RALPH FASANO Long Island’s housing crisis gravely impacts our neighbors who have sacrificed to preserve our freedom and keep us safe: the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces. As is the case in communities everywhere, our returning veterans struggle with myriad challenges — including finding affordable housing and often managing lingering mental health challenges, like post-traumatic stress disorder. Our responsibility as a community is to ensure that those who have sacrificed for us have access to high-quality resources when they return from service. One way to do that is to create and upkeep ... 2 Oct 2023 by RALPH FASANO

A Birthday Celebration

On Saturday, October 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at East Hampton American Legion Post 419, we will be having a 100th birthday party for my dad, whom we call affectionately the “Fish Commander.” My dad is a retired cement mason foreman and the oldest living member of Local 780. In the early 1960s, the union assigned him a job to do, some finished concrete work for the Long Island Lighting Company, in Bridgehampton. With some spare time, he took a casual ride through Bridgehampton and East Hampton and marveled at how much the area resembled where he grew up ... by Staff Writer

When the United Nations opened its Climate Summit last week, it stated: “The science is clear. To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, emissions need to be reduced by almost half by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. To achieve this outcome, we need to end our reliance on fossil fuels and invest in alternative sources of energy that are accessible, affordable, sustainable and reliable.” Southampton Town is to be commended, because it recognized this need and indeed has been a leader in the field of preparing for and supporting sustainable solutions to address climate change. BESS Redux

On September 19, a year-old battery energy storage system facility blew up in California. On September 27, a brand-new installation burst into flames in Australia. These events come as unfriendly reminders of the danger we narrowly avoided by placing a moratorium on the giant BESS battery storage planned for a residential zone in Hampton Bays. September 30 marked the one-month anniversary of the moratorium. In the five-month moratorium time remaining, we should revisit the issue and get some answers. The initial fast-track approach to approving Canal BESS showed disgraceful disregard for facts and due process. Representatives from the Town Planning ... by Staff Writer

A New Balance

On Tuesday, November 7, Southampton voters will decide our future. For many years, the Democratic Town Board majority has been overly concerned with the desires of our wealthy residents. Their focus on this demographic might reflect the huge donations that funded their campaigns. No one can deny the economic impact of our moneyed residents on our local economy and their generous support of local institutions. However, their desire to change our town, whether to close a public road or pretend not to violate restrictions on their property, are assaults on the beauty that drew them to Southampton in the first ... by Staff Writer

No Supporting Records

Southampton Village destroys the records that support the village’s calculation of the assessed value of village properties. Thus, the village has no support for the amount residents are billed for village real estate taxes. Residents should consider what they want to do with an invoice that has no credibility. The village probably wants you to just trust them. This is the village that lies to you on every real estate tax invoice. They provide a “full market value” number that is a low-ball, “backed into” amount based on a predetermined assessed value. The use of the wording “full market value” ... by Staff Writer

Will Ryan, an artist who lives half the year in Amagansett and the other half in Maui, has organized two fundraisers to help the people of Lahaina, devastated by a wildfire several months ago. The first fundraiser is a musical titled “Maui Strong,” which will be staged at the Stephen Talkhouse on Sunday, October 15, at 7 p.m., starting with a video blessing and chant from a revered Hawaiian Kumu. The music will start acoustic and by the end of the evening will be full rock. The lineup of musicians includes Klyph Black, Joe Delia, Inda Eaton, Mama Lee, Bosco ... by Staff Writer

Seeing Is Believing

The Press published a Letter to the Editor online under the headline “For the Trades” [27east.com, September 28]. It took note of a campaign sign that candidate Cyndi McNamara had that said she supports the trades, but the letter observed that it is supervisor candidate Maria Moore, as the mayor of Westhampton Beach, who completed the largest infrastructure project in years. The trades were fully employed and paid with grant money; taxes were not raised on the residents. Cyndi, never at a loss for words, responded to that letter and wrote a Facebook post warning people: “Don’t Listen to What ... by Staff Writer

With the Trades

In a world where you can choose to make any argument against my mom, if your strongest is that she has done nothing for the trades, or that she can’t properly represent them [“For the Trades,” 27east.com, September 28], I guess it really is silly season. My mom is Cyndi McNamara, and she’s running to be your town supervisor this fall. When I started high school, my dad lost his workers for his landscaping company. Without hesitation, my mom stepped in. What was meant to be a temporary solution ended up being my mom, working each day beside my dad, ... by Staff Writer
