Junior Maizie Poulakis’s pole vault of 9 feet, 3 inches and freshman Asha Pensa-Johnson’s discus throw of 110 feet, 8 inches earned the Hampton Bays track standouts Suffolk County crowns at the Class C track and field championships at Mt. Sinai High School on May 26.
The pair, boasting personal bests, along with Baymen Timothy Kraycar, Bryona Hayes and Eli Amos, earned All-County nods and the chance to compete in the state qualifiers on June 2 and 3 at Comsewogue High School.
“Maizie and Asha both had amazing days,” head coach Kevin O’Toole said. “Asha’s throw gives her a ton of confidence going into the state qualifiers. Everything has really started to click for her and come together this season at the exact time we’d hoped. She’s only a ninth-grader, so her potential is sky high, and she just needs to keep doing what she is doing every day at practice.”
He said Poulakis is expecting to get to the state meet in Cicero. “It was her first time on a new pole,” O’Toole said. “Her confidence is way up, and she has high expectations and hopes for another personal record.”
The placers helped the girls to a seventh-place team finish, with 32 points. O’Toole said it is the team’s best performance at a divisional or county championship since 2013.
Hayes, a senior, raced her way to third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 2.02 seconds, and finished sixth in the triple jump with a 31-foot-10.25-inch leap.
Sophomore Emma Halsey claimed fifth in the triple jump, 32 feet, 2.5 inches, and earned sixth in 100 hurdles, crossing the finish line in 20.67. Classmate Allie O’Brien clocked in at a personal best 1:18.20 in the 400 hurdles, good for seventh, and freshman Izzy Ospitale finished 10th, in 1:26.51.
Freshman Sofia Galvan’s 5:44.10 finish in the 1,500 run was good for ninth, eighth-grader Adriana Tapfer placed 11th in the 800 run with a time of 2:44.79, and junior Danna Flores nabbed 17th, in 2:53.71.
The Baymen’s 4x100 relay of Hayes, Halsey, Izzi Caine and Leah Fassino ran a season-best 54.33 to earn sixth place.
“The weather was perfect and everyone was thrilled with their own performances and the team’s performance as a whole. They reached their peak fitness at the perfect time, and it really gives us a ton to build on and look forward to for next year,” O’Toole said. “Overall, the girls had an awesome experience at this meet.”
