Crews contracted by Suffolk County will begin repaving a one-mile stretch of Main Street in Hampton Bays early next week—as long as the weather cooperates, according to Southampton Town officials.
The entire project, which is part of a $1.8 million road reconstruction initiative focusing on the hamlet, should be wrapped up in about two weeks, according to a press released issued by Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman’s office on Tuesday.
Workers are expected to start at the Flanders Road intersection and work their way east, ending just past the King Kullen shopping center, according to the same release.
Workers are expected to begin work at 7 a.m. most weekdays and will focus their morning efforts on the westbound lane in order to minimize the disruption of traffic. They will then work on the eastbound lane in the afternoon when most traffic is heading in the opposite direction.
Cars will not be permitted to park along the stretch of Main Street during the repaving, town officials warned.
Prior to laying new asphalt, workers spent the past fall and winter installing new drains and sidewalks, and upgrading its some of the hamlet’s traffic signals.
The county, which is paying for the work, purposely delayed the laying of new asphalt until the spring.
