The Hampton Bays wrestling team hosted its annual Doc Fallot Memorial Dual Meet Tournament on Saturday, December 11. Head coach Mike Lloyd and his staff have gotten running the event down to a science, at this point.

The Baymen hosted seven other teams in Amityville, Connetquot, East Hampton, Elwood-John Glenn ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams, Southampton and St. John The Baptist. A few changes were made to this year’s tournament to coincide with COVID-19 protocols, but most wrestlers were able to get in four matches on the day, which is what is important this early in the season.

“Running a tournament is not easy logistically, but having done it enough, I agree that we’ve been able to get it down to a science,” Lloyd said. “In 2019-2020, we challenged ourselves a bit and moved from eight to 10 teams in the tournament with three mats in the back gym and five rounds instead of four. Obviously, that wouldn’t be COVID friendly now, so we moved back to the traditional setup of four mats and four rounds.

“We had some last minute changes with participating teams, but I definitely thought it was successful,” he added.

Both Cooper Shay and Kenneth Lainez led Hampton Bays on Saturday. Shay won all four of his matches by pin in a combined 3:30, and Lainez won all four of his matches, as well, two by pin, a decision and a forfeit. Kevin Saa Pacheco won two of his four matches by pin.

The Baymen have two matches before a long holiday break. They’ll be at Southampton this Friday, December 17, at 4:30 p.m. and then they’ll host Center Moriches on Thursday, December 23, at 5 p.m. before getting nearly full two weeks off before their next match on January 5 at Mattituck at 5 p.m.
