The Southampton boys and girls cross country teams competed at the Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park this Saturday, and a number of runners walked away with medals.
Laine Yastrzemski, Ariana Pike, Billy Malone, Evan Simioni, Saintino Arnold, Tanner Morro and Joey Cerullo all took home some hardware.
“Anytime you go to Manhattan and medal — it’s one of the largest cross country meets in the country with 2,000 to 3,000 runners — we have to celebrate the fact that they medaled,” Southampton boys and girls head coach Eddie Arnold said. “I was very pleased with their performances. It’s a very fast course and a great introduction to the state meet, if any of them were to make it there, because it’s very similar competition of what they might see at states.”
The boys, as of Tuesday morning, are 2-1 after victories over Hampton Bays and Elwood/John Glenn. Their lone loss was to league title favorite Bayport-Blue Point. The Mariners ran against Shoreham-Wading River on Tuesday. A victory over the Wildcats would secure second place in League VII and a spot in the Division IV Championship race at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on October 26.
Heading into Tuesday’s meet, Billy Malone was undefeated in league dual meets and is one of a handful of runners who are in line to earn All-League honors. Arnold also said he is going to take both of his teams to the Freshman/Sophomore Championships at Sunken Meadow on October 29.
