Hannah A. Culver
Hannah A. Culver, a resident of East Quogue for 75 years, died of heart failure at her home in East Quogue on Monday, November 21. As the last surviving sibling of nine brothers and sisters, she was 98.
While attending Cornell University, from which she graduated with a major in horticulture, she met her husband, Andrew. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1986. Two years later Mr. Culver died of a stroke.
Ms. Culver worked side by side with her husband on their chicken farm in East Quogue for 20 years before becoming a caseworker at the Suffolk County Department of Social Services in 1957. She continued in that position for 25 years, retiring in 1982.
She had been a member of the Olde Towne Garden Club of Southampton and was an enthusiastic gardener all of her life, growing both vegetables and flowers, which she loved. The produce from her garden and the beauty of her flower beds were appreciated by many.
Once a strong and energetic person, she made a number of friends while playing sports and cards. She enjoyed frequent bridge games, played volleyball for years, and functioned on bowling leagues until she was 94. In her retirement she volunteered for the “Blind and Sighted Group” of Riverhead until she was no longer able. For more than 50 years she was a member of the East Quogue United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir until 2002.
She is survived by her children, Janet Culver of Riverhead and Stephen Culver of Pennsylvania; and three grandsons, all of whom live in California.
No services are planned.
