Helen O. Hedges of Bridgehampton died on August 9 at Southampton Hospital. A juvenile diabetic since age 6 and blind since 1956, she was 76.

Predeceased by her parents and a brother, she is survived by her husband of 54 years, Edwin Hedges of Bridgehampton; her mother-in-law, Miriam Hedges; five brothers-in-law and their wives, Eugene and Caroline Hedges, Albert and Dorothy Hedges, David and Denise Hedges, William and Barbara Hedges, and Jack and Chris Hedges; three sisters-in-law, Florence Lanz, Ruth Ann and her husband Fred Guver, and Margaret and her husband Lenny Makowski; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family received friends on August 12 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton, where a parish prayer service was conducted by the Reverend Richard Dillon. Funeral services, officiated by the Reverend Monsignor Ronald Richardson, were held on August 13; interment followed at Edgewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Bridgehampton Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 1280, Bridgehampton, NY 11932; Bridgehampton Senior Nutrition Center, P.O. Box 1059, Bridgehampton, NY 11932; or the Community Center for the Blind and Sighted, 126 Sunrise Avenue, Riverhead, NY 11901 would be appreciated by the family.

A simple fact about the SALT deductions is being obscured with Nick Lakota’s statements in the news. If the 2017 tax rules expire, residents will once again be able to deduct 100 percent of their state and local taxes. If all New York representatives vote together, the new budget will fail. “Fighting” for a higher limit is unnecessary.
